Strathspey Thistle threw away a two goal lead to crash out of the Scottish Cup at the weekend to Gala Fairydean Rovers.

The Jags had stormed ahead thanks to goals from new arrival Kane Davies (15th) and Michael McKenzie (20th) and also had chances to add to that whilst in front.

But Gala responded through Jack Beaumont (25th) and Jags keeper Steven Martin then took a nasty kick to the side of the head and eventually had to come off at the break

Nicky Reid equalised in the 32nd minute and the floodgates opened.

Liam Watt gave the Borders side the lead a minute later before Reid got his second in the 36th and Jamie Semple got the first of his hat-trick in the 39th minute.

The five goals in 15 minutes was a remarkable turnaround and effectively ended the tie as the Jags' woeful record in the Scottish Cup continued.

Semple completed his hat-trick in the 48th and 56th before Lasana Drammeh added the eighth in the 90th minute.

There was success for other Highland League clubs in the old competition.

Forres Mechanics will meet Buckie Thistle in the second round of the Scottish Cup following Sunday's draw.

The Cans, who needed penalties to beat North Caledonian League minnows Golspie on Saturday, host the Jags who won 4-0 at Tayport.

Elgin City will encounter several familiar faces when they visit East of Scotland League Jeanfield Swifts.

The Perth side, who were once managed by former City boss Gavin Price, have several ex-Elgin players in their ranks.

Ex-City striker Chris McLeish scored in Swifts' 3-1 success at Wick Academy, with former Borough Briggs colleagues Chris Dodd, Scott Smith and Aaron Whitehead also in their squad.

Squad members Keiron Stewart, Connor McLaren and Olly Hamilton have also been on City's books as permanent or loan signings in the past.

Huntly will host League 2 Forfar Athletic while Deveronvale are at home to Broxburn Athletic.

Turriff United visit Cumnock Juniors.
