Strathspey Thistle lost their crucial weekend basement battle with Nairn County going down 4-2 as relegation fears grow.

A victory on Saturday would have taken the Grantown side off the bottom of the league but they are now five points adrift having just picked up two points so far this campaign.

It was the first time that Nairn County had won a Highland League match this season and a first victory in all in six months after going through a dreadful run of 12 matches without a win in all competitions.

Nairn's last victory was a 5-3 win against Turriff United on the final day of last season on Saturday, April 16 which was 189 days ago.

But their long wait for a competitive victory came to an end this afternoon with Callum MacLean putting them in front after 14 minutes.

Nairn doubled their advantage through Conor Gethins four minutes before half time.

Scott Davidson extended their advantage seven minutes after the break with Gethins making it 4-0 in the 72nd minutes.

Strathspey threatened a stunning comeback late on when they scored twice in quick succession through Aidan Cruickshank from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute and then just a minute later but Nairn then held firm.

It means that the Jags have not won since April 6 when the beat Forres Mechanics 3-1 at Grantown's Seafield Park.
