Former GB Olympian and world number one half-pipe star Lesley McKenna proved that she is still a stand-out performer in the sport despite being long-retired as a top-level competitor.

McKenna was comfortably the women's winner of the snowboard banked slalom championship title at The BRITS.

She clocked a best time of 53.58 seconds in her second run to eclipse her opening run of 54.21 seconds on the twisting course at the top of The Ptarmigan bowl.

She was one of several snowsports stars from Badenoch and Strathspey to shine at the GB snowboard and freeski champs at the weekend at Cairngorm Mountain.

Aviemore's Euan Baxter finished runner-up in the men's British Banked Slalom Championships with a best time of 48.77 seconds.

He just missed out to winner Matt McCormick by less than four-tenths of a second in a highly field of 51 riders.

The strath's Jamie Trinder claimed victory in the men's slopestyle snowboarding competition scoring an impressive 90 points for his run.

The BRITS also marked a return to competition for the first time in almost 15 years for Aviemore's former GB snowboarder-cross champion Stevie Trolland.

He finished second in the legend category in the banked slalom championship and ninth overall despite failing to complete his second run after crashing out into the safety fencing.

Trolland told the Strathy: "My first run was not the best but it was okay.I was going really well in the second run and took the first bank absolutely brilliant where other riders were slowing down.

"I managed to go at it straight and got a great line into it and carried loads of speed but then I got caught with a bit too much weight at the back of my board which made me take the bank too wide going round and sent me flying over the next bank and straight through the fencing - taking it with me as I went through it.

"I didn't hurt myself at all but I was annoyed as I was going really well and had a good plan for the bottom section."

He added: "It has lit a wee spark in me to do more so I really hope The BRITS comes back in some form to Cairngorm Mountain next year or even hosts a Scottish championship."

The Cairngorm Snowboard Club scooped a number of medals across all age ranges.
As well as coaches McKenna, Baxter and Trolland's successes, they landed four medals at junior level thanks to Joshua Botherstone (gold in banked slalom U12); Aaron Perch (bronze in U16 slopestyle); Rochelle Amos (silver in U16 banked slalom) and Eoghain Sutherland (bronze in U16 banked slalom).

There was plenty of praise from organisers and competitors for the standard of the courses set and the rails created at the resort – much to the delight of Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd chief executive Susan Smith.

She said: "The BRITS has showcased Cairngorm Mountain at its best.

"Our technical team received the highest level of praise from the GB Olympic representatives in terms of the quality of the set-up of the Ptarmigan Bowl for the competition and has reminded people from all walks of life that Cairngorm can put on top level competitions.

"Our staff did an amazing job in all aspects of the business and we are grateful to the skiing community for the support they gave our team."
