Newtonmore held their annual dinner dance and player of the year awards at the Balavil Hotel as they celebrated the 2023 shinty season.

Blue and Whites' vice chieftain Cammy MacDonald gave thanks to the club’s many sponsors, volunteers, supporters and indeed the players for their dedication and commitment to the club before announcing the winners which were presented with their trophies by first team co-manager Evan Cheyne.

The first team player of the year was full back Rory Kennedy.

The Blue and Whites’ co-manager Norman MacArthur said: “Rory was outstanding for us last season and his performances were on another level.

“He was the obvious winner.”

The club’s second team player of the year accolade also went to a full back with Cameron McNiven taking the prize.

Second team manager Peter Ross sang the praises of his defender throughout last year, also emphasizing that McNiven can be pushed into the attack if a goal was required late in the game.

The young player of the year trophy was presented to Brodie Macbean who is currently recovering from a knee injury, and he featured for both the Eilan’s first team and second team last season.

MacArthur commented: “Brodie has had his operation and now needs time to work through his recovery.

“The injury is a shame as he would definitely have stepped up to the first team this season.”

• The Newtonmore first team have put two fixtures in the diary ahead of the new shinty season getting under way.

‘More host their Fort William counterparts next Saturday (February 10) whilst Skye Camanachd are the visitors on Saturday 24 February, just a week before the start of the new season.

The matches will be played on either the Eilan or the Dr Johnny Cattanach field.

Meantime, the Newtonmore second team open their pre-season against Lochside Rovers, who finished second in Mowi South Division 1 last season, at Ganavan on Saturday.

Throw up is at 1pm.
