One of the earliest sports clubs to be formed in Badenoch and Strathspey no longer appears to be skating on thin ice

Strathspey Curling Club is holding its AGM next week and is in a much better position than when members issued an SOS in March to try and recruit new members and raise interest in the game once again.

The club had been on the slide for a number of years because of factors outwith its control – including the loss of the Aviemore Centre rink and Covid – and its future had been in doubt after nearly 170 years.

Club secretary Barry Main told the Strathy: “The club held an Extraordinary General Meeting in mid-March and we had a much larger attendance than expected, with representatives from other clubs, the Aviemore ice rink, Scottish Curling and Anagach Woods trust who all showed great concern and support to us.

“Lots of suggestions and advice were given with regards electricity and water costs, fund raising and grant opportunities.

“We have since held a quiz night which was a great success and received some very generous donations, all helping to put us on a more even keel and hopefully put the club in good stead going forward.”

The club is holding its AGM in the clubhouse this Monday (August 14) at 7pm and hopes to see as many people as possible. Mr Main added: “The club would like to thank most sincerely, all who have and continue to support us and look forward to a busy curling season.”
