Glasgow Warriors rugby stars to help promote the game in Aviemore

Strathspey Rugby Club will have some famous faces to help them with their come try evening tomorrow.

The club will be hosting members of the Glasgow Warriors at the Aviemore Community Centre pitch from 8.15pm to 9.15pm.

The Glasgow Warriors – one of Scotland's two professional rugby teams – are beginning their 2022/23 season campaign in Inverness with the club hosting Worcester Warriors at the Caledonian Stadium on Friday 2 September, kick-off 7.30pm.

The fixture is part of Highland Rugby Club’s centenary year celebrations.

But before that the players and staff will be assist Strathie – the area's only rugby club – with their own special evenings to bring more locals into the game.

Club spokesman Rod Andean said: "The club has managed to organise a free 'give it a try' session this Wednesday (August 31) from 8.15pm to 9.15pm which will include a meet and greet with some of the Glasgow Warriors' players who are staying in Aviemore ahead of their Friday night pre-season clash with Worcester Warriors at Inverness Caley Stadium."

Mr Andean said all were welcome although any under 14s need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

He added: "We hope as many people can come along as possible. This is an absolutely fantastic opportunity for supporters to meet some of the top players."

The long established club is currently not involved in any league set-up but does hold a weekly touch rugby session every Monday night 7pm-8pm at the Aviemore pitch.

The sessions are open to all although they must be 14 or over and have parental consent if under 18).

The cost is £1 per session.

Mr Andean said: "It is a fun environment for people to throw a rugby ball around, have a laugh and keep fit."
