An Aviemore schoolboy has claimed victory in the Spanish junior national powerlifting championships with his deadlift being the heaviest in the entire contest.

Joel Aragoneses, a S5 pupil at Kingussie High School, won the under-18 title in the -105kg category at the Campeonato de Espana Junior-Subjunior de Powerlifting Carranque at Toldeo in his native homeland.

The 16-year-old notched up some impressive figures on his way to victory at the end of last week with his deadlift of 270kgs being a stand-out.

And it could have been even better. Aragoneses told the Strathy: “I just missed the 290kgs as the bar slipped from my hand.”

Aragoneses had earlier squatted 240kgs and bench-pressed 112.50kgs.

There were more than 40 junior competitors and Arganoneses combined weight lifted was only bettered by Borja Moreno lifting in the -93kg class and two years older than the local youngster in the entire junior champs.

His training base is Aviemore Community Centre’s gym where he also works as a Highland High Life leisure assistant.

He only took up powerlifting a little under a year ago and has made huge strides.
