Unconfirmed reports are coming in that this afternoon's fly-by over Badenoch and Strathspey by the famous Red Arrows had to be diverted just minutes before leaving Lossiemouth.

All across the strath people stayed at their windows with cameras ready to catch the formation team – one school even turned out en masse to spend half an hour in the playground cricking their necks and scouring the sky for a rare glimpse of the team.

Follow the arrows....this was the team's own itinerary posted hours before departing from Lossiemouth.

The Strathy now understands that security advisors had warned of a possible terrorist threat 500ft below, at ground level – you know, that one at the funicular railway, which has precluded the owners of the hill from answering any questions over its future, especially questions put to them using the Freedom of Information Act.

More on that later.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen just which route – if any – the Red Arrows did take.

The Strathy has asked and is awaiting their reply.

All the same, while many around the area have posted their frustration and disappointment over the RAF's no-show today, the head teacher at Grantown Grammar found it all highly amusing, along with many of her pupils.

Claire McGonigal told us: "I thought it would make you laugh to know that some of my S6 pupils, clearly keen followers of The Strathy, told me at lunch that the Red Arrows were flying over the strath this afternoon.

"So the whole school came out and stood, faces to the sky, to see them. Sadly they took a different route but we all had such a laugh waiting in the sunshine, it was still worth going outside.

"In all fairness, there’s not many schools where you can get about 400 people standing on a pitch, disappoint them, name and shame the S6 who told you that the Red Arrows were coming and then send everyone back to class with them applauding the S6 pupils for giving them some time in the sun!"
