A larger number of Scottish Water consumers in the Badenoch capital have been cut off following an incident at roadworks taking place at the northern end of the town.

A road is being built serving a new housing development by Kerrow Drive and townsfolk say water is pouring out of a burst main onto the High Street – and flowing away.

Shops have reportedly had to close with no supply since the break earlier this morning.

Both Kingussie High School and primary school have had to close for the day, with hundreds of pupils sent home.

A main has been punctured, say observers, and while water is pouring out at the works there is no other supply south of the incident.

In the summer a similar break occurred and hundreds of consumers were without their water supply for several hours before the rupture could be sealed.

A spokesperson for Scottish Water said: "We are currently repairing a burst water pipe caused by third party damage which is causing the interruption to the water supply for customers in Kingussie.

"The water supply will gradually return to normal for customers once the repair has been completed. The estimated time for repairs to be completed is around 4.30pm.

"While we carry out the repair, please be aware that you may experience no water supply, low / intermittent pressure or discoloured water.

"At present we expect to complete the repair in a timeframe which means we do not plan to provide bottled at distribution locations.
