A doctor who has helped care for children at Raigmore Hospital for 20 years has been named this year's Highland Heroes' healthcare hero.

Dr David Goudie picked up the award, sponsored by Carzar, at a glittering and emotional ceremony organised by Strathspey and Badenoch Herald publisher Highland News and Media and held at the city's Macdonald Drumossie Hotel last night.

The paediatric consultant paid tribute to fellow nominee Alison Finlay, a nurse based at Raigmore Hospital, and the team that works with him to provide care on a daily basis at the busy children's ward.

Keen not to see the award as something that only he deserves he said he jokingly talked about how he expects his colleagues to be "slagging him off" come Monday morning when he's back on the ward but also said of his job: "It's absolutely a team effort...I've had experience of a very junior member of the team just putting their finger on something, and if you have a team that works so that that person, even if they are a student nurse or something, can bring that information up in a way without fear that they may not always be right...I have had a number of cases where that has made a big difference."

He also talked about being nominated for the award by the family of a child he treated – them being so impressed bis approach.

"It was a very special experience," he said.

It echoed comments made at the time of his nomination when he said: "It's incredibly rewarding when our team is able to deliver a quick diagnosis, treatment plan and appropriate nursing care.

"Any family whose child is experiencing serious health issues is under a great deal of stress; as a team we do our best to alleviate that as soon as possible."
