An injured hillwalker was airlifted from the Cairngorms in 'challenging' conditions at the weekend.

He was amongst a party of six hikers, 2500 feet up in a remote part of the range.

One of the group suffered a lower leg injury in poor weather that included torrential rain and low visibility.

Seventeen members of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team were called out on Saturday to the Saddle in what turned out to be a six hour operation late into the night.

With low cloud shrouding the hill, the Inverness-based coastguard search and rescue helicopter was unable to assist initially.

"The team walked seven kilometres up Strathnethy to the casualty's location," said Iain Cornfoot, leader of Cairngorm MRT.

"Thankfully there was a brief break in the weather and the helicopter crew were able to fly in and winch the casualty to safety.

"It was poor weather and low cloud in a remote location giving very challenging conditions."

The man was taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

His condition is unknown. His companions made their own way off the hill.
