The early morning mist was lifted away on Sunday when piper Sandy MacDonell played The Flowers of the Forest at Kincraig War Memorial.

Many of the villagers turned out to pay their respects to The Fallen as the memorial was ringed, not just by grateful and respectful generations of locals but by delicate hand-knitted poppies, each one bearing the name of a local hero who made the supreme sacrificed in the world wars.

"So many in the armed forces gave up their lives so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today," said event organiser Ian Ash, after welcoming the worshippers.

All generations were represented at the memorial, where Rev Jim Crompton led the prayers and schoolchildren from the village and Kingussie paid their respects and laid their wreaths.

From Alvie Primary School, Archie Freshwater laid that of Forces Manor, the village's new R&R facility for all the services.

Cara MacLead and Maiten Pizarro read the first tribute in verse, followed by Donald MacLeod and Malky Mainland.

From Kingussie High School, Jack Clark laid a wreath and Gaelic verse was rendered by Seoras McKerron and Innes Macdonald.

Villager Gabby Nagle paid her own tribute to those who 'gave their todays' for our tomorrows.

There will be a round-up of photographs of our local communities remembering The Fallen in this Thursday's Strathy.
