The Highland Council is to monitor the exterior entrances of public conveniences to ensure public safety, better manage anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

Redeployable dome CCTV cameras will be used to monitor the buildings on a rolling basis.

Mounted on street lights or on the external wall of the public toilets, the devices transmit live and recorded video via mobile networks.

The all in one surveillance system combines an infrared camera, local recording capacity up to 4TB and wireless transmission technology system uses wireless transmission.

Live and recorded footage is accessed via 4G, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity allowing users to remotely view the video via laptop.

A council spokesperson explained why the wireless CCTV system was required: "Public safety, reduction of anti-social behaviour and vandalism is of utmost importance.

"Recording devices provide a factual record of events where such have been recorded and have been shown to resolve these issues and reduce the fear of crime.

"Privacy by Design is a code of practice issued by the Information Commissioner under section 51 of the Data Protection Act and recommends that all services should be subject to a privacy impact assessment – which includes public consultation.

"The council wish to understand the public's views so they can be included in our privacy impact assessment."

The address for representations is: The Highland Council, Amenities Services, Unit 4C, Dalfaber Industrial Estate, Aviemore, PH22 1ST.

Or comments can be emailed to amenities.services@highland.gov.uk
