There is anger after one of the holes and facilities at a Badenoch golf club was targeted by vandals.

The 14th green and a temporary cabin were badly damaged in the incident at Newtonmore Golf Club on Thursday evening.

Big chunks were taken out at the hole and the surrounding area of the putting green.

The club posted: "Our head greenkeeper was very dismayed to find the 14th green and the cabin extensively damaged this morning.

"Whoever did this should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves and we're currently reviewing our CCTV footage and actively following up a lead."

There has been anger and dismay expressed by local and visiting golfers.

Jeanette Meldrum stated: "This is disgusting. The greens were beautiful when we played last week. I know how much work goes into this. So sorry this has happened."

Robin Prescott said: "I hope that anyone who lives near the course or playpark with home security cameras or smart doorbells checks to see if they may have picked up anything useful.

"The culprit or culprits need to be identified and effective action taken.

"I feel so sorry for the greenkeepers in particular but also everyone who enjoys our great course."

Craig Dawson posted: "Unbelievable – should be named and shamed if caught."

Richard Selvester stated: "This is nothing short of a total disgrace. I hope the culprit is caught and severely dealt with."

Gayle MacArthur posted: "Disgrace. We have just played the course and feel so lucky we have such good greenkeepers as you'd barely know it had happened. These guys work so hard – it's awful they've even had to contend with this."

Sean Kersse observed: "Not the only damage in Newtonmore last night."

A club spokesperson said: "We are very disappointed that this incident has been carried out by at our small village golf club.

"It is totally unacceptable behaviour so we would ask that all our members are extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity on the course or around the clubhouse.

"If anyone has any further information please contact the club or the police."
