Residents in one of Aviemore's biggest residential areas were greeted by raw sewage in their streets at the turn of the year.

Human faeces was strewn at the side of the roads and even in the curtilage of some properties in Burnside Place and Burnside Road.

Staff from Scottish Water have been on-site to clear the blockage and to tidy up the mess following the spill which is believed to have been caused by a major blockage in the sewerage network.

Resident Anna McArthur told the Strathy: "There is an ongoing issue with a major blockage between Burnside Place and Burnside Road and sewage has been coming up at two points in the street behind number 1 to 4 Burnside Road and the Burnside Place junction.

"Scottish Water have had a team out attempting to drain and clear it but this has been an issue since early evening on 31st December.

"There is wastewater and raw sewage spread across both streets. The smell has been awful."

She added: "Scottish Water were very helpful on phone but have just actioned it in the New Year despite it being an environmental health risk."

Scottish Water has been asked for a comment on this latest incident.

It follows another recent blockage in Aviemore which left waste water and raw sewage lying for weeks by a popular underpass in the village.

The area was initially cordoned off by Scottish Water but it was around one month before contractors Rentokil were on site to remove the sludge at the back of Craiggowrie Place near to the cut through onto the Dalfaber Industrial Estate.
