Dalwhinnie has recorded the coldest night of the year so far in the UK with the temperature plummeting to -14C.

However, that figure could be shortlived with weather experts saying that parts of the region could drop to -15C overnight tonight.

BBC weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood told viewers that Dalwhinnie had set the new record for this year overnight but parts of the North of Scotland could be even colder tonight.

The freezing weather has resulted in all schools across Badenoch and Strathspey being closed for the day.

School closures can be checked here.

Parents of pupils at Kingussie High School were told: "Due to weather conditions Stagecoach has suspended all school transport today. KHS is closed to pupils. Prelims will be rescheduled to another day.

"Please check Google classroom for online work."

Cairngorm Mountain is reporting current temperature of -10C.

In an update at 10am, a resort spokesperson said: "There is fresh soft snow on our open terrain. There has been around 12cm of new snow since yesterday afternoon. The new snow has improved conditions across the mountain on the open pistes, with a level fall, slight drifting at the top...

"The terrain remains frozen at all levels."
