Walkers are being warned that access will not be available to two popular car parks serving the Cairngorms from tomorrow for the foreseeable future.

The snowgates at Glenmore – the entrance to the Cairngorm ski resort - are to be locked.

It means that the Sugarbowl car park - a popular starting point for the Chalamain Gap circuit – and the Allt Mor car park will be out of bounds.

A Land Forestry Scotland spokesman said: "As of the afternoon of the 24th of December, we expect the snow gates to Cairngorm Mountain to be closed until further notice.

"Please be aware that this will mean the Sugarbowl and Allt Mor car parks will also be closed from that point until further notice.

"All other Forestry and Land Scotland car parks and trails in Glenmore will remain open."

The public authorities and Cairngorm Mountain are concerned that cars may get stuck in snow on the road serving the resort, especially with snow now falling in the area and a yellow warning of heavy snow to come issued by the Met Office.

The board of Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd took the decision to close the resort from the end of tomorrow following the Tier 4 restrictions announced on Saturday by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon which will apply to all of mainland Scotland from Boxing Day.

The resort is responsible for clearing the road from the snowgates at the top of the Hayfield to the Coire Cas car park.
