TWENTY-FIVE new positive tests for Covid-19 have been recorded across the NHS Highland region in the past day, the Scottish Government has announced.

The region's cumulative number of cases rose from 1772 to 1797 when the latest daily update was published.

It means there have been 100 cases across the region in the last five days, including a cluster of eight in an Aviemore hotel over the weekend.

Across Scotland there were 1504 fresh positive tests for the coronavirus in the past 24 hours. The figure represented a sharp jump on recent days, although the Scottish Government cautioned that "the increased number of new cases today (when compared with 934 reported yesterday) may have been affected by backlog issues at UK Government laboratories over the weekend".

The number of people requiring hospital treatment rose by 17 to 1078. Of those, 59 people were in intensive care – an increase of one.

No further people are reported to have died since the last update, although registry offices are usually closed at weekends.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no fresh infections in either NHS Eileanan Siar or NHS Orkney. But NHS Shetland's cumulative tally increased by one to 77.

NHS Grampian recorded 144 new cases, to take its overall tally to 6408.

And NHS Tayside saw its running total increase by 136, to 7173.

There have now been 113,050 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across Scotland since the spring.
