The funeral will take place tomorrow of the final member of Newtonmore's 1959 Camanachd Cup winning side.

Allie MacGregor passed away aged 85 at the home of his daughter Alison at Glenelg on March 8.

He had lived there for several years but previously his home was on Newtonmore's Church Terrace.

His death marks the going of the last member of the Blue and White's Scottish Cup team who beat Kyles Athletic 7-3 at Old Anniesland in Glasgow.

The 1950s were a golden period for the Eilan side.

Ex-Newtonmore star Rob Ritchie said: "Allie was a skilful defender, small in stature, who kept himself very fit.

"I recall him running with myself and fellow players around the golf course in the dark, us wearing plimsoles and him wearing his working boots coated in tar, leading the way.

"A few years prior to the final, Allie saw National Service and found himself in the Korean war, serving with the Cameron Highlanders, a worrying time for his family.

"When the war ended, he served with the peace keeping force until the end of his service when he returned home to Newtonmore to meet his late wife, Margaret Matheson and raise a family, Isobel, Sandy, Alison and Sheena, to whom, along with their children, we offer our sympathy,

"Allie spent his working life here with Robertson’s, Dunfermline and as a machine operator with MacRae where his skills with his machine were legendary in the building trade.

"The late Ally Fraser paid tribute in poetry to all the 1959 team and now, wth Allie’s passing they are all gone.

"His words on defender Allie were 'On the ball to stop them all is terror Al MacGregor'."

The funeral service will be at the Church of Scotland in Newtonmore at noon and then on to Banchor Cemetery. Donations are being collected for Cancer Research.
