A series of updates yesterday, following Friday night's drama over the Flying Scotsman's low-speed collision with the Royal Scotsman carriages at Aviemore Station's platform three, left travellers unclear as to the situation.

At first the company intended to run a normal SSR service from the morning but this proved impossible, with safety checks still to be carried out.

Various times were posted for resumption of local steam trains but they all came to nothing.

Now at least, the company has confirmed today's train times in asking for continued patience from its travellers.

"We ask for your understanding in what has been a particularly difficult situation.

"Refunds – and part refunds where applicable – will be processed in due course and with Saturday's cancellations, it is proving difficult to answer all social media posts and emails individually for which we apologise.

"There is a large backlog which we are working through."

The Flying Scotsman locomotive will not haul any more trains, as it is awaiting a full mechanical inspection on Monday – the earliest that can be secured by the owners, Manchester's National Railway Museum.
