Emergency services attended and a 74-year-old man, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 73-year-old female passenger was taken to Raigmore Hospital.

The deceased has this afternoon been named as Frank Spencer, of Boat of Garten, who for nearly nine years defied doctors' diagnoses of a rare heart disease which left him with "just months to live".

Mr Spencer, in fact, was in 2019 to achieve a heroic feat of driving his mobility scooter to the top of Cairngorm to raise awareness of the killer cardio amyloidosis.

The Strathy was able to report on Frank and Julia's 50th wedding anniversary celebrations only three weeks ago.

His family has paid tribute to him today:

"Tragically, as a result of events on the 26 May 2022, we sadly lost Frank Spencer, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.

"Julia was seriously injured but is receiving amazing care at Raigmore hospital.

"The whole family would like to thank the people who were first on scene, for their kindness and compassion.

"Our heartfelt gratitude also goes to the emergency services for their professionalism and empathy, which has helped immensely."

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 2596.
