Two mammoth missions mix at Kincraig

The man creating a unique R & R base for the three British services in Badenoch played host to another remarkable man on a mission over the weekend.

Tony Brown is transforming Kincraig's former Ossian Hotel into a bespoke base for the forces but took a wee break for a day or so to host "Tiny", a former French Foreign Legion soldier, after seeing him cycling his trailer through Aviemore.

"He is one seriously determined guy," confirmed Mr Brown.

Tony and Tiny wish each other well with their mammoth projects.
Tony and Tiny wish each other well with their mammoth projects.

"Tiny, as he’s called, is cycling a coastal route around the UK to raise funds for Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

"I did point out to him that he was just about as far from the coast as he could be in Scotland, but he just laughed and took it all in his stride, having had good reason to veer away from his initial course. He just wants to touch base with as many people as possible during his mammoth tour."

It started last December and won't finish for months yet, when he finally returns to his boat home back on the south coast near Plymouth.

Tiny told the Strathy that he was determined to raise as much cash and awareness as he could for various charities doing battle with the dreaded PTSD.

"It's a hellish condition for which there is no formal or governmental programme of assistance. For some guys their worst battles in life begin after they cease active duty and I want to help change that."

Mr Brown explained: "Tiny has been homeless for the past 18 years, so sleeping rough on his mammoth trek comes as no big shock as he cycles during the day pulling his loaded trailer.

"I just wanted to allow him a couple of quiet nights catching up with his sleep here.

"I'm seriously impressed and wished him all good luck as he set off again today."

Tiny's tour can be followed via his Facebook page.

There's more on this story in Thursday's Strathy.
