Thunderstorms expected to hit the Cairngorms, Met Office warns as it announces yellow weather warning; parts of Inverness-shire, Ross-shire, Sutherland and Caithness also in alert, which covers swathes of Scotland and England

THUNDERSTORMS are expected to hit the Cairngorms and some other parts of the Highlands later today, the Met Office has warned.

It has issued a yellow weather warning for much of England and the eastern half of Scotland.

It comes amid soaring temperatures and high humidity, with records expected to be broken in parts of the British Isles in the coming days.

The weather warning takes effect at 3pm today and remains in force until 4am.

"Hot weather [will spark] scattered thunderstorms later on Thursday, continuing overnight," said a spokesman.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"There is a chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, or damaged by lightning strikes, hail or sudden gusts of wind."
