THREE more cases of Covid-19 have been detected by NHS Highland in the past 24 hours – the fifth day running that the region has detected at least one infection overnight.

The area's cumulative number of confirmed coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic rose to 396 when the latest daily update was published at 2pm.

The three fresh diagnoses came as 71 newly-confirmed cases of Covid-19 were recorded across Scotland in the past 24 hours.

The number of people being treated in hospital for the virus increased marginally – up five to 254 – but those in intensive care remained unchanged on two.

And there were no new deaths reported among those who had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new cases in NHS Shetland, NHS Orkney or NHS Eileanan Siar.

But NHS Grampian detected 10 new infections – taking its overall total to 1883.

And NHS Tayside saw its number of confirmed cases jump by 31 to 1924. The sharp rise has been linked to an outbreak at a poultry factory in Coupar Angus. The number of cases associated with the cluster at 2 Sisters poultry factory is now 68, and more than 600 workers at the factory have been tested as the authorities try to contain it.

There have been 19,605 positive tests for Covid-19 across Scotland since the beginning of the pandemic earlier this year.
