"A close call at Rothiemurchus yesterday ….!"

That's the post tonight from Rothiemurch Estate in the 'honeypot' tourist area of Glenmore, which has not been short of controversy this summer.

"A camp fire was lit a few days ago under one of the Granny Pines near Coylumbridge," said an estate spokesperson via social media.

"The campers probably thought the site was safe when they left, but evidently the fire continued to smoulder amongst the tree roots before flaring up in the wind causing this potentially serious incident."

Community vigilance and support meant the fire was extinguished quickly, but the pictures show there was still significant damage.

"Huge thanks to all of the following - the team Cairngorm Mountain – it was their staff who first spotted the fire and alerted Peter Ferguson, our Biodiversity Manager.

"Peter located the fire and alerted the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

"Thanks to the Cairngorms National Park Ranger Service, who were quick on the scene to help and of course to our own Rothiemurchus Rangers, who continued to monitor the site into the night, to check for further flare ups.

"Please take heed – this is the reason why fires are not permitted in forested areas. The risk is just too high."
