She said that she had enjoyed her time in the Highland capital but the Grantown school has a 'special place in her heart'.

Mrs McGonigal said: “I’m very much looking forward to returning to Grantown Grammar in the New Year.

"It’s been a privilege to support Inverness High School as their interim headteacher before their permanent headteacher starts in the New Year but there’s no school like GGS!

"I’d like to thank the pupils and staff at Inverness High for making me so welcome this term.

"I especially enjoyed their ‘Chance to Chat’ with S1 parents and helping the S6 pupils decorate the school as a Christmas surprise for staff and pupils, so there are definitely some ideas I’ll be taking back to Grantown.

"I’d also like to thank Scott Wilson for doing a brilliant job as acting headteacher in my absence supported by depute head Ruairidh Ross, Rachel Knight and Mark Abenheimer as acting depute heads and the whole staff.

"Grantown Grammar School, the pupils, staff and the whole community have a very special place in my heart and I’m keen to get back where I belong in the New Year to support and challenge the school on its journey to excellence.”
