Highland Council has just announced that all schools in Badenoch and Strathspey and across the region will be closed next Wednesday because of strike action.

The local authority said that the schools will only be open to those staff not taking part in the nationwide industrial action over public sector pensions.

A council spokesman said: "We can confirm that all schools in Highland will be closed to pupils on Wednesday 30 November due to strike action by school staff.

"This will affect 31,000 pupils at 182 primary schools, 29 secondary schools and 5 special schools.

"Schools will remain open for school staff not involved in strike action."

NHS Highland bosses have already said that hospitals in the region will remain open.

However, they will only be providing emergency and other vital services such as cancer treatment.

The day clinic and other non-essential procedures will be cancelled.

Union bosses have said that they expect the strike to be the biggest in a generation.
