Strathy readers followed his epic trek which ended successfully a year ago, prompted as it was by the tragic death of his mother, Marian, whose illness had gone undiagnosed.

To raise awareness of the scientific shortcomings and to boost funds for the continued research into cancers, the former businessman spent weeks preparing for the heroic gesture and after setting out kept followers and friends fully informed of his progress by posting a daily podcast from 'under the world'.

Now he is to help the local Boat Talks programme which is staged at Boat of Garten's superb Community Hall.

The talk will cover the training and preparation required to undertake such an ordeal, the journey just to reach the starting point and, of course, the days and nights of skiing, camping, navigating and finally reaching the Pole.

The pictures that show the story are fantastic - wild, rugged, open and beautiful terrain alongside the effort, exhilaration and exasperation that Ben felt throughout his epic adventure.

The talk will get under way at 7.30pm.
