After all the recent upheaval over staff problems, Strathspey Steam Railway is looking to appoint a new general manager.

A spokesperson told the Strathy this morning that the post will be advertised from tomorrow.

In October bosses openly admitted the vital strath attraction was facing an uncertain financial future after a walk-out by staff members and volunteers.

More than 40 staff and volunteers backed an expression of no confidence after a meeting in the Cairngorm Hotel but the directors refused to stand down.

Allegations of bullying, harassment and staff safety failings arose and were subsequently denied, although the board conceded there were areas for improvements.

A statement this week from the joint boards of the railway has now advised all volunteers, employees and SRA members:

"We are about to advertise for the full-time position of a general manager, responsible for the day-to-day management of the railway and to this end an advert will shortly appear in various publications and websites, including our own. "This is culturally, a major step forward, not only to improve overall management and control, but also to help the SRC board to transition to the slimmer, more strategically focused model envisioned by the joint SRC/SRA improvement plan."

With the creation of the new chief of ops the company is aiming to improve communication internally in an effort to consolidate after the recent turmoil.

"We also believe that this important role will provide enhanced communication between employees, volunteers and indeed to all supporters of the railway who want to see it get back on track."

The 'sits vac' notice advises: "Candidates without any transport or heritage railway experience are encouraged to apply, as we are looking for an effective manager with strong leadership and excellent administrative, HR and commercial skills to lead the railway going forward.

"We will provide on the job experience and training across the various railway departments as required."

The position is full-time and salaried on a pay scale of £35,000 to £45,000 a year inclusive of all overtime, depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications, with a basic hourly week of 37.5 hours.
