The SNP and Independent groups have confirmed they will enter a coalition to form the political administration of Highland Council, as reported last night.

Following discussions between the SNP and Independent Groups at Highland Council, they jointly agreed to form a coalition with the intention of forming a Joint Council Administration.

It was confirmed that the decision was ratified by both groups yesterday and will see the SNP enter power at the local authority for the first time since 2015.

Independent Group Leader Councillor Lobban said “I look forward to working closely with Councillor Bremner and the SNP Group over the next five years.

"This agreement will provide a settled long-lasting administration and we will work together for the benefit of the people of the Highlands.”

The Leader of the SNP Group Councillor Raymond Bremner said “I’d like to thank the Leadership of the Independent Group for their time during our amicable discussions over the past week.

"We have had the ability to discuss a number of things relating to Council and we look forward to forming a Joint Administration that will provide a stable basis on which to take Council forward for the new term.”

The proposal for a majority Administration of the two groups will be put to the full Highland Council meeting on May 26 for formal agreement.

Candidates for senior positions at the Council will be made over the coming days and will be proposed at the same meeting.
