Cairngorm Mountain is to open tomorrow for the start of the new ski season but there will be little fanfare with only limited snowsports on offer.

Interim resort chief executive Susan Smith told the Strathy: “We are planning to have a soft launch opening on Saturday.

“It will only be on the artificial beginners’ slope – 140m in length – as most of the natural snow had disappeared from the lower slopes.

“Our capacity for the beginner slope is 100 skiers and snowboarders.”

She continued: “We expect that conditions are getting colder as we head towards Christmas and hopefully this will provide natural snow cover on the mountain. That will enable us to run uplift from the Car Park tow, but only when sufficient snow arrives.”

The Cairngorm funicular remains out of operation for winter 2020/21 on safety grounds but is scheduled to reopen in a year’s time.

A spokesman for resort owner Highlands and Islands Enterprise said good progress had been made on the repairs to the mountain railway.

He commented: “Balfour Beatty has now completed the programme scheduled for this year which involved excavating areas around five of the pier bases and carrying out initial strengthening works.

“The contractor is currently demobilising for winter and works will resume in the spring.”
