This afternoon Claire and Dave Candy, who ran the shop – as much a gathering place as a retail outlet – posted on Facebook:

"Due to the parent company being dissolved, the shop has been forced to close permanently effective immediately.

"Thanks for coming."

The shop opened with some celebration in June last year as it revived a former office which had stood vacant for some years. The building was formerly occupied by solicitor J Keith Robertson and was hailed as a virtual ‘department store’ including new books, children’s reading room, wool shop, sheet music centre and even a community swap shop.

It was a joyous return to the High Street for the Candys, who had once based themselves as the former ‘White Cockade’ a few doors up.

"Minerva is known as the patron of the arts, crafting and wisdom, which fits everything we do!” said Mrs Candy.
