Motorists have been urged to take care after a "serious" crash closed the A9 both ways near Newtonmore.

Traffic Scotland confirmed the closure at 2.51pm having earlier reported that a collision had occurred and was restricting the flow of vehicles at the scene.

The exact time of the crash is not yet known, or the number of vehicles involved.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The A9 is closed in both directions north of the Ralia junction due to a road crash. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. A diversion is in place."

The Herald has reached out to the police for further details.

Confirming the closure earlier in the afternoon, Traffic Scotland said: "The A9 in both directions at Newtonmore is closed due to a road traffic accident, road users are advised to use an alternative route and expect longer than normal journey times."

A separate tweet through its social media channels described the crash as a "serious collision" and urged motorists to use an alternative route.
