Grantown Grammar School staff and pupils have long felt they have the best school canteen in the country – now they’re close to proving it!

That was the confident message this week from head teacher Claire McGonigal, after a splendid performance by the school’s head chef in a prestigious national competition.

Elaine Cullen competed in the semi-final of the Scottish School Cook of the Year on Friday and won to progress through to the big final in Glasgow. At the semi in Inverness, she emerged triumphant courtesy of her Cajun turkey strips accompanied by egg fried rice and a medley of vegetables – all of it followed by her delicious lemon curd tart complete with Scottish raspberries.

Highland Council Catering organised the big event and afterwards Elaine said: “I had a lovely day and was delighted that my recipes turned out so well. But I have to do it all again when the final’s announced.”
