A retired senior police officer appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court and admitted a minor assault on his wife who, the court heard, had been mistakenly accused of infidelity.

Sheriff Sara Matheson heard that 79 year old Alexander Sutherland, who served with the then Northern Constabulary, had an argument with his spouse after they returned home from a tennis match.

Fiscal depute Emily Hood said: "The argument was over alleged infidelity. He seized her by the arms and pushed her on the bed."

The incident happened in Carrbridge on June 11, this year and after the offence had been reported to police, Sutherland was released on an undertaking to appear in court on Wednesday June 21.

His defence solicitor John MacColl told the court: "It was an argument involving a misunderstanding over something that happened during a tennis match earlier that day.

"Given his previous profession, he is mortified to be here today. He has nothing but love for his wife."

Sheriff Matheson admonished Sutherland but warned him if it happened again, it would not be the same punishmen
