A RECORD-breaking 98 new Covid-19 cases have been detected across NHS Highland – the region's single largest daily increase since the pandemic began.

It sent the area's cumulative total number of cases above 1500 to 1559 – up from 1461 this time yesterday.

The increase was the fourth largest recorded anywhere in Scotland in the past 24 hours.

Some 966 new cases of Covid-19 were detected across the country since yesterday's update.

Nine-hundred-and-sixty-five people were receiving hospital treatment for Covid-19 – down 17 on the previous day. Of those, 65 were in intensive care, a fall of four.

And sadly 41 further people have died after testing positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new cases in the Northern or Western Isles.

NHS Grampian record 68 new positive tests – taking its cumulative total above 5000, to 5008.

And in NHS Tayside, there were 66 fresh infections, for a running tally of 6137.

There have now been 98,686 positive tests for Covid-19 across Scotland since the pandemic began.
