Motorists are being warned that new speed limits have come into force on the Cairngorm ski road.

There are also new restrictions on place on the B970 Aviemore – Inverdruie – Coylumbridge - Nethy Bridge road.

The contractors appointed to carry out sign installation work associated with the new speed limit order for the C1126 Glemore to Cairngorm Road finished ahead of schedule.

The ski road had been 60mph for most of its length apart from through two built-up areas – at Rothiemurchus and Glenmore – to the Coire Cas Car park but now the maximum speed is 50mph.

The busy Inverdruie area now has a 30mph limit.

Councillor Ken Gowans, chairman of the council's economy and infrastructure committee, said: “It is pleasing to note that contractor on the Glenmore Speed Limit scheme, MacDonald Plant Ltd, have worked tirelessly and have completed the sign installation works.

“As a result, the live date for the scheme is being advertised as Friday 22 December 2023, and this aligns with previously published information.

“The Highland Council would like to thank all consultees, members and our delivery partners MacDonald Plant Ltd for their collective efforts in delivering what will be an important safety improvement to the Glenmore corridor.”

The speed limit through the Dell of Rothiemurchus is now reduced from 40mph to 30mph with the lower limit in place all the way from the roundabout at High Range to beyond the Colyumbridge Hotel.

The Cairngorm ski road is then a 50mph limit all the way to Loch Morlicfh side when it drops to 30mph.

The speed limit in Glenmore is 30mph and then is 50mph up to the one-way system for the ski resort road to Coire Cas car park when it drops to 30mph.

The local authority announced a delay to new speed limits earlier this month which had prevented works taking place.

However, the recent milder spell has worked in the favour of the contractors and the project is back on track.
