Motorists using the A86 near Loch Laggan are being warned of potential delays with timetabled night-time convoys in place whilst road surface improvements are carried out over the coming three weeks.

The works are due to get under way this Monday (March 14) and will see over two kilometres of the Newtonmore-Fort William road being resurfaced.

The repairs are expected to take place on two sites over three weeks, and to be completed by 6am on Friday 1 April subject to weather conditions.

• The programme of works is as follows: A86 Tullochroam – Monday 14 March to Monday 28 March (11 nights, excluding Friday and Saturday nights), 8pm-6am.

Due to the narrow carriageway width at this location of the A86, a full road closure will be implemented between 8pm and 6am to allow the works to be undertaken safely.

As there is no suitable diversion route available, amnesties will be provided at 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, 12am, 2am, and 4am each night.

During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site under a 10mph convoy traffic management system. Road users are encouraged to arrive in good time to ensure they are accommodated within the amnesty period.

• A86 west of Lochaber boundary (daytime) – Tuesday 15 March to Wednesday 16 March (two days), 7am-7pm.

A 10mph convoy system will be in place on the A86 between 7am and 7pm each day.

• A86 west of Lochaber boundary (night-time) – Tuesday 29 March to Thursday 31 March (three nights)

Due to the narrow carriageway width at this location of the A86, a full road closure will be implemented between 8pm and 6am to allow the works to be undertaken safely.

As there is no suitable diversion route available, the same arrangement will be put in place as for Tullochroam including convoy times.

Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Outwith working hours, and to keep disruption to a minimum, a speed restriction of 30mph will remain in place on the A86 as traffic will be running over a temporary surface.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West representative, said: “This surfacing project encompassing two locations on the A86 near Loch Laggan will help to address defects and greatly improve the route for road users.

“The planned overnight closures are essential to completing the works safely given to the narrow widths of the road at these locations.

"We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project as best we can, avoiding Friday and Saturday nights and by undertaking works overnight or by maintaining through traffic using convoy operation when conducting daytime works.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance.

"We encourage road users to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
