Laggan Coffee Bothy and Gallery has been a very popular drop-in spot.
Laggan Coffee Bothy and Gallery has been a very popular drop-in spot.

Laggan Coffee Bothy and Gallery’s coffee machines have been turned off for the time being – but a whole new era at the popular meeting place is promised.

Gordon Stirling and Stuart Lilley, who have run the premises so successfully since taking over over four years ago, recently sold the business to Sonya and Kevin Fletcher, owners of neighbouring Coul Estate.

“Since moving to Laggan in 2018 just before we moved here ourselves, Sonya and Kevin have invested considerably into the estate creating and supporting local jobs,” said Messrs Stirling and Lilley.

“They have also held a number of charity events with all the funds raised going back into the local community.

“When the legal formalities are complete, we anticipate that the business will be handed over to Sonya and Kevin towards the end of January.

“We hope that our loyal customers continue to give them the same support we have enjoyed as they take the business forward.”

As they turned the machines off just before Christmas, the former owners could not resist publishing some statistics relating to their time serving the public both in Badenoch and beyond.

They are still astonished at the level of business they accomplished in their time in the strath: “We will let the figures speak for themselves.”

In the last four-and-a-half years they have prepared over 53,000 hot drinks, 13,000 breakfast rolls, more than 6000 sandwiches, 5000 paninis and 4000 toasties, over 6000 bowls of home-made soup and served over 9000 slices of cake and 4000 traybakes.

They pair posted: “Not bad for a small café in the Scottish Highlands! Whether you have visited us once or like many have made us a regular stop either on your travels or as part of your weekly trips out for coffee and cake or lunch we will miss you all.

"The friendship you have offered us and the support you have given is something we will never forget.”
