The new operator of CairnGorm Mountain has told the Strathy of plans to extend the life of the surface ski-tow.

Natural Retreats Ltd is assuming responsibility for the ski resort operations this week.

A spokesman confirmed: "As part of our agreement as owners, Highland and Islands Enterprise is investing in the existing surface ski-tow network to extend its life.

"This involves the replacement of key ski-tow components where such replacements or refurbishments have not already been undertaken in the last few years.

"We anticipate this work will be agreed and undertaken over summer/autumn 2014 and the summer/autumn of 2015."

But the investment does not include the two chairlifts in Coire na Ciste.

As the spokesman also said: "There are no firm plans at present to improve the west wall ski tow, though we are looking into the possibility of lengthening the towline by around 45m to enable users to access the Ptarmigan more easily.

"If this idea does go ahead, we would also look into the possibility of modernising the return wheel at the top of the tow."
