A “bonkers 74-years-young mum” has just got home to Nethybridge after cycling from Lands End to see that Nepalese girls get the education they deserve.

Trish Davies, former maths teacher, businesswoman, hotelier and B&B owner, had so enjoyed her cycle trip last year up to John O’Groats that she was determined to do “the other bit” before she was 75 and, this time, to raise some money for a worthy cause.

Thus her daughter, Samantha Kelly, posted this message on her justgiving page: “My bonkers 74—years-young mum is about to set off on an attempt to cycle her e-bike from Lands End to her home - something like 1000 miles.

ON YER BIKE: Trish loved every minute of it and had superb support from friends, some of whom turned out for the occasional 'booster'.

“She already did the Nethy Bridge to John O’Groats leg of 250 miles last autumn to test out her bike/bum/resolve.

“Since then, lots of family and friends have been keen to support her, and have asked if she is raising money for charity - which, in fairness, is the only rational explanation).

HOME AT LAST: On making it to Aviemore Trish was treated by her friends - some of whom had done the odd stint along the way - at Ryvoan Cafe.

“Having given it some thought, Mum has decided that if there‘s the opportunity to raise some funds, she would really like to support work that her friend Marian Burrows-Smith does, building toilets in Nepal.

“Marian has been organising the provision of toilets for girls in Nepal for many years. The lack of privacy in shared toilets puts many girls off from attending school and completing their education.”

As she got her breath back on Sunday Trish told the Strathy: “You know, I’ve actually never felt healthier! It was a wonderful trip and I’ve had such fantastic support from everyone. I might even do another one some time!

Her friend Marian was chuffed at her friend’s safe return and delighted at the support for her own cause, which Strathy readers have been following for some years now.
