HIGHLAND Council has given safety assurances that all window panels are being thoroughly inspected at the main entrance of Aviemore Community Centre after two panes failed.

There was a danger that at least one window could have fallen from a considerable height into the lobby which is also used as a main access to Aviemore Primary School.

Pupils are due to return to the school on August 21. It is understood one pane was cracked and the other could have dropped out.

Repairs were carried out on Monday and the local authority said all other panes are being inspected.

A council spokesperson said: "Two glazing panels in the school entrance lobby failed. No glass fell out. Steps have been taken to have the glass panes removed. Replacement panes are on order and will be fitted as soon as possible.

"The reason for the glass failing has been due to the hot conditions that it has been exposed to from the lobby side and cooler conditions internally from the air conditioned room.

"This has caused expansion and contraction differences causing the panes to fail.

"The area affected has been taped off as a precaution and staff have been made aware of it. Signs have been posted to advise on temporary access to the building.

"All panes are being inspected and where required, panes will be replaced to the specification."

The window suppliers expect to have the units made up and fitted within 10 working days.

Badenoch and Strathspey Highland councillor Bill Lobban said: "Investigations as to the cause of the problem have been carried out and full checks made.

"I appreciate that it is a bit inconvenient for the main access to be closed off whilst repairs were being made but I hope everyone will appreciate that the safety of the public is the paramount concern."
