NHS Highland area reports a further 16 positive tests for Covid-19; increase comes as 689 new coronavirus cases were detected over the whole of Scotland

SIXTEEN further Covid-19 cases have been reported across NHS Highland.

The region's cumulative number of cases rose to 1697 when the latest daily update was published on Wednesday.

Scotland reported 689 positive tests for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours.

Some 1031 people were receiving treatment in hospital for the virus yesterday – up 35 from the previous day.

Of those, there were 49 people in intensive care, an increase of four.

And sadly a further 38 people have died after previously testing positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, the Northern Isles' recent run of days without new cases continued into Wednesday, but NHS Eileanan Siar recorded one fresh infection, to take its cumulative total to 90.

NHS Grampian added 81 further positive tests, for a running tally of 5893.

And NHS Tayside's total rose to 6822 after 61 new cases were detected.

There have been 107,438 positive tests across Scotland since the start of the pandemic.
