MKM Building Supplies has announced its acquisition of one of the strath's best known companies.

The UK’s largest independent builders merchant has confirmed it has bought Spey Valley Timber and Builders Merchants based on the Dalfaber Industrial Estate.

The new owners have said they will be adding kitchen and bathroom showrooms as well as expanding the range of products on offer at its new branch.

MKM has been expanding its presence in Scotland with the company opening up in Inverness last month.

The addition of Spey Valley takes MKM’s Scottish network to 17 branches.

The acquisition follows a period of significant growth in Scotland for MKM, with the business opening the new branch in the Highland capital – on July 12 – with Peterhead scheduled to follow in September.

Founded in the 1980s, Spey Valley Timber and Builders Merchants is a locally owned independent business that supplies building materials, equipment and accessories to tradespeople throughout Aviemore, Badenoch and Strathspey and the wider Highlands.

It is understood that no jobs will be affected.

Kate Tinsley, CEO of MKM Building Supplies Limited, said: “The acquisition of Spey Valley Timber and Builders Merchants marks an important step forward for our operations in Scotland.

"With a shared focus on customer service excellence and providing unparalleled choice, we’re delighted to welcome the branch to MKM’s growing network.”

Brian MacDonald, managing director of Spey Valley Timber & Builders Merchants, commented: “We are looking forward to embarking on this exciting new chapter for our business with MKM.

"For us, MKM were the ideal choice.

"They have a well-renowned reputation for being a ‘people’ business, and I can think of no better fit for our long-serving and loyal workforce than MKM.

“Crucially, the partnership will further strengthen our offering to the region.

"We will be adding a kitchen and bathroom showroom to the branch, alongside offering a new range of plumbing and heating products – areas in which MKM are incredibly strong.

"This is fantastic news for tradespeople in the region, as it means they can get an even wider range of first-rate products, all under one roof.”

The value of the deal has not been revealed.

The acquisition comes at an exciting time for MKM.

The independent merchant is in the middle of an ambitious growth strategy, which has seen a host of new branches open their doors across the UK, also including Birmingham North, Barnsley and Penrith in recent months.
