More misery for train travellers as Storm Gerrit hammers the Highlands

Train travellers in the Highlands face another spate of cancelled services today as Storm Gerrit brings snow, heavy rain and winds of up to 70 mph.

Replacement buses are serving the route between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh with flooding having closed the track for urgent repairs near Garve until January 3 at the earliest.

With speed restrictions imposed between Inverness and Edinburgh, ScotRail has opted to cancel a good number of today's scheduled services.

This morning's 06:38 Inverness to Edinburgh service was cancelled between Inverness and Perth.

The 08:38 and 10:32 departures from Edinburgh to Inverness will also be cancelled, along with the 08:43, 09:42 10:50 and 12:48 services from Inverness to Edinburgh as part of a revised timetable due to speed restrictions.

Services between Inverness and Elgin have also been hit by at least 10 cancellations, with passengers advised to check all Scottish routes before travelling.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "A yellow weather warning has been issued by the @metoffice for wind, snow and rain, with gusts of 60-70mph expected in some places.

"To ensure everyone's safety, we're introducing widespread speed restrictions throughout today across a number of routes.

"We're asking anyone with garden equipment such as tents, trampolines or furniture, to please secure items so that they don't blow on to the tracks and put people in danger.

"If you're planning to travel today, take the time to check your journey with your operator before heading out."
