Police are still investigating the circumstances around a man's death in Inverness last night.

A 55-year-old Inverness motor mechanic has died after an "altercation" near his home.

He has been named locally as John Birrell, the owner of North Coast Customs and Birrell's MOT and Service Centre.

He passed away on Monday evening, after an argument in the street at Blackpark, Inverness.

Emergency services were called, but Mr Birrell was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem is due to be carried out to establish the cause of death.

Police Scotland confirmed that a 65-year-old man is in custody but no charges have been brought against him as yet.

The owner of a business neighbouring Mr Birrell's operation in Carsegate Road North said: "I am very shocked, we all are. John has a lovely wife and children, who will sorely miss him."
