To celebrate the 2022 Winter Olympics, the Macdonald Aviemore Resort is seeking to reward those who share a name with one of the strath's local Olympians.

The resort is offering a 35 per cent booking discount to anyone with either the same first or same second name as one of the Cairngorms’ home-grown Olympians.

Holidaymakers who share a name with ex-Olympians such as Alain Baxter, Mike Dixon, Ewan Mackenzie, Noel Baxter and Lesley McKenna can take advantage of the special offer this March, saving on their standard flexible rates at the four-star resort.

Those booking to stay at the resort under the Olympian offer will also receive complimentary tickets for everyone in their party for the village’s community funded ice-skating rink, Aviemore Ice Rink, subject to availability.

Opened in October within the grounds of Macdonald Aviemore Resort, the rink has been established through community fundraising.

It has already had more than 10,000 visitors, with plans in place to expand the popular destination through ongoing fundraising.

While initially planned to run until Easter, Aviemore Ice Rink is now set to continue until the end of May.

The Cairngorms boasts a higher percentage of home-grown Olympic athletes per head of population than anywhere else in the UK.

The local athletes also include Ian Finlayson (skiing), Peter Fuchs (skiing), Roddy Langmuir (skiing), Sean Langmuir (skiing), Ewan MacKenzie (Nordic skiing), Louise MacKenzie (Nordic skiing), Ingrid Grant (skiing), Andrew Freshwater (skiing), Douglas Dryburgh (curling) and James Dryburgh (curling).

The others from further afield are Eve Muirhead (curling), Glen Muirhead (curling), Thomas Muirhead (curling), Alan Stewart (skiing) and Ana Stewart (skiing).

Iain Miller, managing director at Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, said: “Aviemore really is the snowsports capital of Scotland, with the Cairngorms National Park home to three of Scotland’s five ski centres.

"While we can’t always rely on the snow, in a good year with peak conditions we can see as many as 120,000 visitors travel to the Cairngorms to hit the slopes.

“The Aviemore Ice Rink has been a fantastic addition to the town and is proving to be hugely popular with both locals and visitors.

"Our new offer is a tribute to the generations of winter sports talent connected with Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park.

"We look forward to showing guests from across Scotland, and further afield, why this area is so special to visit at this time of year.”

Macdonald Aviemore Resort’s Olympian offer is valid on new bookings made from this Thursday for stays throughout the remainder of March.
