How much is that Scottie in the auction? Ask Aviemore's Roma
How’s this for a pet project?
Artist Roma McCook could not resist the opportunity to design her own giant Scottie, first to help attract tourists from around the world to Scotland and secondly to raise vital funds for Maggies Cancer Care.
“I loved doing it,” the Aviemore born and bred graphic artist told the Strathy this week, as her beautiful dog prepared to part company with the 29 others of the ‘Scotties by the Sea’ trail around St Andrews and the East Neuk of Fife.
“It was a huge success and broad loads of publicity to the east of Scotland with so many people travelling across the world just to follow it.”
Roma (30), who was educated at Aviemore Primary School and Kingussie High School before heading off to university at Dundee, is now based in London.
She is a full time graphic artist specialising in pet portraits.
She was invited to design her own dog in the trail for sponsorship by the AFS Group of Dundee.
“I was thrilled to be accepted and to play my part in a great project which now comes to the charity stage.
“At the weekend all the dogs were viewed together as the organisers prepared to auction them off later this month, with the aim of raising a pile of cash for Maggie’s.
“Anyone will be able to bid so please tell all the Strathy readers they can join in and maybe offer a forever home to my boy in Badenoch and Strathspey!”
The Scotties by the Sea Charity Auction will take place on November 30 from 6.30pm.
Each sculpture has been individually designed and painted by amazing artists like Roma and will now help Maggie’s.
