As family and friends prepare to mark the first anniversary of the tragic death of Morgan Evans, they can at least now celebrate a remarkable achievement in his memory.

The popular Aviemore man who was about to sit his final entry exam for Police Scotland died suddenly aged just 23 on February 26, last year, because of an undiagnosed heart condition.

His devastated family launched an £8,500 fundraising appeal shortly after his death to bring an annual heart-screening service to the strath in a bid to prevent similar tragedies.

The family pledged "We won’t let Morgan just become a statistic," and now CRY – the national charity addressing Cardiac Risk in the Young - will be coming so local youngsters can have free heart check-ups.

A long list of money-spinning events have been held. Now Morgan’s sister Angharad Humphries has told the Strathy: "We have reached our target."

This year’s Kingussie Food on Film Festival devoted its major raffle to the cause, bringing in just under £600 which has tipped the balance.

"It was a wonderful gesture from the team at Food On Film to have donations from the raffle go towards Morgan’s fund with CRY," said Mrs Humphries. "Talk about community spirit!

"It can take up to a year to arrange the screening van, however, and I’m now in talks with CRY to get that sorted."
