The capital of Badenoch is celebrating an exclusive burst of opera in glorious sunshine.

Pop-up Opera has hit the road for Summer 2021 with a bumper tour featuring five of Gilbert & Sullivans' best-loved hits and their one performance in our region is being staged right now at Kingussie.

It's a bit of a coup for the town's Am Fasgadh Regeneration Company to have the show take place and it is certainly doing justice to the brilliant makeover job that's taking shape at the Gynack Gardens courtesy of the town's community development company and assorted volunteers.

"It's been a sell-out for some time," Lydie Bocquillon told the Strathy on behalf of the organisers of the show, "and we have perfect weather too."

Two performances are being given – one at 12.15 and the other at 3pm – and Scottish Opera, in organising pint-sized versions of HMS Pinafore, The Gondoliers , Iolanthe, The Mikado and Pirates of Penzance, promise: "Safety for all audience members, performers and technical staff has been built into all three productions from the very start.

"Physical distancing and other safety measures will be observed at all times, with no compromise on your protection – or on your spellbinding operatic experience."

The audiences are set to be taken on an unforgettable journey through the operas’ musical and dramatic highlights – in just 30 minutes each. Packed with screwball humour, memorable characters, and of course brilliant tongue-twisting tunes, these mini operas are perfect for audiences of all ages.

Pop-up Opera is supported by Garfield Weston Foundation (Weston Culture Fund), Backstage Trust, The Cross Trust, The Thistle Trust and Scottish Opera’s Education Angels.
